Choosing a cabinet or sideboard

Old storage furniture was built to be used every day, so it usually has solid backs, real drawers and doors that have been opened ten thousand times. That use is part of its character, and the listing for each piece says what has been repaired or restored.

Questions about cabinets and sideboards

What's the difference between a sideboard, a buffet and a cabinet?

A sideboard is a long, low piece for a dining or living room, usually with drawers above cupboards. A buffet is the French name for much the same thing, often taller and with a deeper top. A cabinet is any piece built mainly around doors and shelves, from a tall cupboard to a glazed display cabinet.

Can a sideboard be used as a TV unit?

Yes, and a low reclaimed elm sideboard or media cabinet is one of the best-looking ways to do it. Check the depth (around 40cm or more holds most equipment), the height (the centre of the screen should sit close to eye level when seated), and whether there is a way to route cables at the back.

How do I measure up for an old sideboard?

Measure the wall, then take off a few centimetres for skirting boards and anything that sticks out. Allow room for doors to swing and drawers to pull out fully, and check the route in: the narrowest door, the turn of the stairs. Every listing gives width, depth and height.

How do I look after an old cabinet?

Keep it away from radiators and direct sun, dust it with a dry cloth, and wax it once or twice a year. If a door or drawer sticks in damp weather, that is the wood moving; a little wax on the runners usually cures it.
