Choosing a console table
A console table does a lot in a small footprint: somewhere for keys and post in a hallway, lamps behind a sofa, or a narrow desk on a landing. An old one brings the first impression of a house to life.
Questions about console tables
What size console table do I need?
Most console tables are between 75 and 90cm tall and 30 to 45cm deep. In a hallway, leave enough room to pass comfortably: a narrow hall usually needs a table no deeper than about 35cm. Behind a sofa, aim for a table at or just below the height of the sofa back.
What's the difference between a console table and a sideboard?
A console table is narrow and often open underneath, made to stand against a wall without taking up the room. A sideboard is deeper and lower, built around drawers and cupboards for storage.
Can a console table be used as a desk?
Often, yes, if it is deep enough for a laptop (around 40cm or more) and there is room for your knees under the top. Drawers make it more useful still.
Is elm a good wood for a hallway table?
Yes. Elm is hard-wearing and hides the knocks a hallway table takes. The one thing it dislikes is a radiator right beside it, so give it a little space from direct heat.
