Why elm

Elm has a wild, interlocking grain that makes it tough and hard to split, which is why it was used for chair seats, cartwheel hubs and workbenches for centuries. It ages to a deep honey or grey-brown, and no two boards look alike.

Questions about elm furniture

What's the difference between antique elm and reclaimed elm?

An antique elm piece is the original piece of furniture, usually around a hundred years old or more. A reclaimed elm piece is newly made from old elm timber salvaged from buildings, floors or earlier furniture. Both have the character of old wood; only one has the history of the object itself. Every listing here says which it is.

Where does reclaimed elm come from?

English elm became scarce after Dutch elm disease killed tens of millions of trees from the late 1960s onwards, so most reclaimed elm furniture sold in Britain is made from timber salvaged in northern China, where elm was a common building and furniture wood.

Does elm crack or move?

Elm is a lively timber, and it responds to the air around it. Fine surface checks and small splits are normal in old elm and are usually stable. Keep it away from radiators, stoves and direct sun, and it will settle into its new home.

How do I look after elm furniture?

Dust with a soft dry cloth, wipe spills promptly, and use coasters under hot or wet things. Wax once or twice a year with a good beeswax polish. Avoid silicone sprays, which leave a film that later wax won't key to.

Will elm sit with oak or pine?

Yes. Elm's colour sits between pale pine and dark oak, and its strong grain gives a room a natural focal point. One characterful elm piece in a room of quieter timbers usually looks best.
